Data Studio Codelab from LEAP Summit 2018

A few weeks ago I ran a workshop on Google Data Studio alongside Anthony Claypool, Director of Curricular Programs & Data at Distinctive Schools. We put it together for the 2018 LEAP InnovatED Summit, a convening that focused on sharing best practices around personalized learning. We wanted to highlight Data Studio as a report building tool that can be leveraged to build meaningful data dashboards for organizations. A key part of the Data Viz Starter Pack is that while it has an open source scripting library powering the refresh of data sets, no coding is necessary on the school’s side to build data dashboards.

Our workshop contained a short introduction to Google Data Studio and Google Sheets before unleashing the participants to follow a Codelab on the product. I am linking that Codelab below so that you may follow along as well and learn the basics of Data Studio. This Codelab will give you some fake school data as your data source for building reports. If you are comfortable with extracting data from your SIS, feel free to use your school’s data. With the Data Viz Starter Pack, schools receive access to this data via Google Sheets or Cloud SQL, refreshed on a schedule that they decide. Enjoy and happy building!
